Travelling around Sri Lanka with young kids can incredible, but let’s be honest -there are times when everyone needs a break from the heat.
Whether you’ve spent the morning sightseeing, need somewhere to fill a few hours before your flight, or simply want to let the kids burn off some energy in air conditioning, Colombo has some surprisingly great indoor play spaces.
After visiting these ourselves with our two young daughters, these are the places we’d recommend.
Punchi’s Café: Our Favourite Hidden Gem
Tucked away inside a gated residential community, this beautifully converted home combines a relaxed café with thoughtfully designed play areas for children. It doesn’t feel like a typical play centre. It feels more like visiting someone’s stylish family home. The second story had soft play BUT they were strict that is was only for four and under but the downstairs areas were enough for our girls to be entertained.
While our girls happily explored and played, I was actually able to sit down with a coffee and start reading Ali Wong’s memoir from the bookshelf available for adults. Felt a bit luxurious!
The café serves food and drinks, making it an easy place to spend a couple of hours without feeling rushed.
Best for:
- Toddlers and preschoolers
- Parents wanting a proper coffee break
- Escaping Colombo’s afternoon heat
PlayVo
The play equipment is modern, clean and designed for younger children to climb, explore and burn off energy in a safe environment.
The main difference is that there wasn’t food available when we visited, so we’d recommend eating beforehand or planning to head elsewhere afterwards.
Even without a café, it’s still a great option if your kids simply need a few hours of active play in air conditioning.
Best for:
- Active toddlers and younger children
- Rainy days
- A quick indoor activity
Playdium at One Galle Face
Located on the lower ground floor of One Galle Face Mall, Playdium has very similar vibes to Timezone.
You’ll find arcade games, racing games, claw machines and plenty of activities for older kids and teenagers, although younger children will still find things to enjoy.
Because it’s inside one of Colombo’s largest shopping centres, it’s also an easy stop if you want to combine shopping, lunch and entertainment in one place.
Best for:
- School-aged children
- Families with older siblings
- Indoor entertainment before or after shopping
Havelock City Mall
Havelock City Mall has a couple of different options for families.
On the rooftop you’ll find an undercover playground. Even though it’s shaded, we still found it a little warm during the middle of the day, so we’d suggest visiting later in the afternoon if possible.
One thing we really appreciated was that staff were supervising the play area, giving parents a chance to sit nearby and relax while the kids played.
Inside the mall you’ll also find arcade-style games and a fun ball pit, giving families multiple entertainment options under one roof.
Best for:
- Mixing shopping with play
- Families with children of different ages
- Short indoor breaks
Which Play Space Is Best?
If you’re travelling with toddlers or preschoolers, we’d recommend:
- Punchi’s Café because it is the most relaxing option for both parents and kids.
- PlayVo for active little ones.
- Havelock City Mall for multiple play options in one location.
- Playdium at One Galle Face for older children who love arcade games.
Final Thoughts
When you’re travelling around Colombo with kids, you don’t have to spend every day outdoors. Having a few indoor options up your sleeve can make a huge difference, especially during the hottest part of the day or if the weather turns.
These are all places we’ve visited ourselves, and each gave our girls a chance to play, cool down and reset before the next adventure.
