When people think of Sri Lanka, the usual highlights come to mind: sun-drenched beaches, misty tea plantations, and ancient temples. But nestled in the lush central hills is Kitulgala, a town that’s quietly earned a reputation as Sri Lanka’s adventure capital.
During one of my past trips to Sri Lanka, I came across Kitulgala during a travel deep-dive and was instantly intrigued. Despite having visited Sri Lanka countless times since childhood, I had never even heard of it and I was excited by thought of doing some adventure sports at a more accessible price point. I got some cousins on board and we did a day trip out to Kitulgala for my first-ever white water rafting experience.
Getting There from Colombo
We did this as a day trip from Colombo. Google Maps suggested the drive from Colombo would take around 1.5 hours. Realistically? It was closer to 3 – classic Sri Lankan traffic. But the journey winds through scenic countryside and small towns, building up the sense of escape from city life. If you don’t have a driver or car, you can arrange a daytrip from Colombo.
Though we made it a day trip, Kitulgala also has plenty of accommodation options, including riverside camping and glamping tents and eco lodges for those who want to stay overnight and explore more.
Upon further research for this article, it looks like doing it as a day trip from Kandy is also a viable option, being 20km closer than Colombo. This package is under $200AUD and includes pickup from your accommodation in Kandy.
Our Rafting Experience
Our rafting journey started with a short tuk-tuk ride, followed by a short trek down into the rainforest to the Kelani River. After a two-minute safety briefing where we were taught essential commands like “relax!” we climbed into our raft and pushed off.
The rapids were Grade 3, making them a great fit for beginners: exciting but not overwhelming. Between bursts of paddling, we floated calmly through stretches of jungle scenery, snapping photos and even hopping out for a quick swim.
The only downside? It was over too quickly. The 5km run left us wanting more. Luckily, longer options (8km and 10km routes) are also available – something I’d definitely choose next time around.

After drying off, we returned to base camp for a buffet lunch of classic Sri Lankan fare: chicken curry, dhal, mushroom curry, rice, sambol, and more. It was hearty, home-style cooking. This is a great opportunity to try a traditional Sri Lankan meal.
For tourists, this kind of package is perfect. You get a real taste of Sri Lanka (both literally and figuratively ) without needing to plan every detail.
After lunch, guests are free to relax in their base tents, take a nap, or simply enjoy the view. But for those who can’t sit still (like me), there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the area:
- Take a dip in the river
- Go trekking through the surrounding forest
- Visit the nearby waterfall or the Bridge on the River Kwai film site
Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a nature-lover, Kitulgala offers the best of both worlds.
Final Thoughts: Should You Raft in Kitulgala?
Absolutely. White water rafting in Kitulgala is a unique, affordable way to experience Sri Lanka’s lush landscape from a new perspective. It’s suitable for beginners, easy to reach from Colombo, and makes for a memorable day or weekend escape.
